Q. How often should my jewelry settings be checked?
A. Have your jewelry settings checked at least once a year to make sure the setting is in good shape and that the prongs holding stones are still strong and secure.
Q. How do I care for my jewelry?
A. Different metals and stones require different cleaning methods:
- Diamonds. Soak diamond jewelry in jewelry cleaner made for diamonds or a mixture of ammonia and water. Use a soft brush to remove any debris loosened by soaking.
- Colored stones. For faceted colored stones, such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires use a prepared jewelry cleaner or a mixture of ammonia and water. For porous stones, such as opal, lapis, coral or turquoise, simply clean with a soft lint-free polishing cloth.
- Pearls. Do not soak pearls or clean with water. Doing so can cause the material used to string your pearls to stretch and loosen. Simply wipe pearls with a soft, damp cloth after wearing to remove body oils and any oily residue from perfumes and body lotions.
- Gold & Platinum. Use jewelry cleaner and a soft polishing cloth to keep your jewelry clean and tarnish free.
Q. Should I have my jewelry appraised?
A. If you plan to insure your jewelry, most insurance companies require an appraisal to confirm the item's value and to provide an accurate description should replacement be necessary due to loss or theft. We recommend that you have your appraisal updated every 3 to 5 years to confirm the item's current value.
