Cut is the first of the 4Cs that determine a diamond's value. Ideally, a diamond must be cut so that light reflects through the top, or crown, of the diamond.
Each diamond is cut on a flat angled surface called a facet; each facet needs to be strategically placed to give a diamond fire and beauty. The pavilion is made up of facets on the bottom half of a diamond. The pavilion must also be cut at a strategic angle so that light will reflect through the diamond's crown. An angle that is too wide will cause light to reflect through the pavilion and an angle that is to narrow will cause light to reflect through the side of the diamond.Several possible shapes are considered, but the final decision is often determined not only by scientific, but also practical considerations. For example the diamond might be intended for display or for wear, in a ring or a necklace, singled or surrounded by other gems of certain color and shape. The traditional 58 facets in a round brilliant diamond, each precisely cut and defined, are as small as two millimeters in diameter. But without this precision, a diamond wouldn’t be nearly as beautiful. The allure of a particular diamond depends more on cut than anything else.
