Diamond Clarity

What to Look for in Certified Diamond Clarity

Diamonds naturally contain some type of minute crystals or inclusions. The number of inclusions affects the Clarity of the diamond.

Diamond clarity refers to the absence of these inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds without these birthmarks are rare, and rarity affects a diamond’s value. Using a Diamond Grading System, diamonds are assigned a clarity grade that ranges from flawless (FL) to diamonds with obvious  inclusions (I3).

There are six categories of clarity for diamonds: Flawless (FL); Internally Flawless (IF)-minor surface blemishes; (VVS);  very, very small inclusions and  ( VS) very small inclusions; small inclusions (SI); inclusions (I)-visible to the naked eye. Diamonds that fall in the FL, IF or VVS category are more valuable than diamonds that fall in the SI or I category.
